Every good repair technician knows that the real secrets of a piece of equipment aren't found in the user manual; they're in the service manual. The service manual is a playbook, and where available, a Service Mode is the ultimate diagnostic weapon. This isn't just about unscrewing panels; it's about getting the machine to tell you exactly what's wrong with it.
It's a beautiful thing when a manufacturer sticks to a good design, and there are a lot of similarities across Panasonic's DVD recorders. The service mode features and tools for a unit like the DMR-EZ28P are not unique to this model alone and you will find other Panasonic units, such as the DMR-ES15 and DMR-ES16 have many of the same functions and procedures. This means that the knowledge and techniques you gain from servicing one of these machines can be directly applied to others in the family. It's a real bonus for anyone who finds themselves with a stack of old DVD recorders to revive!
To unlock this hidden world, you just the right button combination. With the unit's power off, press and hold the [CH UP], [OPEN/CLOSE], and [REC] keys on the front panel simultaneously for five seconds. This will power the unit up and place it into service mode, and the real fun begins. The beauty of service mode is that the suite of tools is accessible even without disassembling the unit.
Once in service mode, the functions are accessed by two digit codes entered into the remote control. Here is a summary of some useful tools.
Laser Power Confirmation
Insert DVD-RAM media and Press [4] [4]
This is the crown jewel. The unit will run a diagnostic to check its laser power against the factory value and the display will then give you a simple judgment result, making it incredibly easy to diagnose a failing drive. Note that it will ONLY work with DVD-RAM media.
The results are graded on a simple integer scale:
0 - "Very good": 1mW or less power value difference
1 - "Good": 2mW or less power value difference
2 - "Bad": 3mW or less power value difference
3 - "Very bad": 4mW or more power value difference
Laser Used Time
Press [4] [1]
This displays the total hours the laser has been in use which includes both playback and recording modes. This is a good way to gauge the overall wear and tear on the drive.
Error History
Press [6] [5] and then press [0] [1] ~ [1] [9]
The past 19 error histories are displayed.
Error codes are displayed for 5 seconds and the different sections of the unit are represented by numbers. For the DMR-EZ28 (and some others) the numbers are:
01: Defect of Digital P.C.B. (AV DEC / MAIN CPU)
02: Defect of RAM Drive.
03: Defect of Disc.
04: Defect of Digital P.C.B. or Communication Error.
05: Defect of Digital P.C.B. (AV DEC / MAIN CPU)
06: Defect of HDD.
Tray Test
Press [9] [1]
A mode to repeatedly open and close the DVD tray, which is perfect for diagnosing a faulty tray motor or mechanism.
Turn on all FL/LEDs
Press [5] [1]
This mode is a quick way to check if all the segments on the display are working and confirm the brightness.
There are also modes available to display output from the video encoder, and also produce audio patterns to confirm signal paths are working well.
As you can see, the service manual for these Panasonic DVD recorders like the DMR-EZ28P is more than just a list of parts; it's an essential tool for any serious technician. These diagnostic modes can save you time and allow you to quickly pinpoint the real problem.
